Europeana highlights: July-September 2021

Every quarter we bring you a round-up of what's been going on across the Europeana Initiative. Highlights from July to September 2021 include discussions about the role of digital culture in the future of Europe, via a European Commission consultation and the New European Bauhaus. We also enjoyed a busy summer of sport, reached milestones in our impact work, and took a deep dive into the implementation of new copyright rules.

On what seems to be a balmy summer evening, somewhere in southern China, an official and his wife are sitting on a bench on a terrace on the bank of a wide body of water.

NEW EUROPEAN BAUHAUS

The European Commission’s New European Bauhaus initiative wants to put sustainability, inclusivity and beauty at the heart of Europe’s future. Through conversations with cultural professionals and heritage advocates, we are exploring the key role that cultural heritage can play.

BRINGING DIGITAL CULTURE TO ALL

Summer 2021 was a summer of sport, complemented by the Europeana Sport season, which shared the story of Europe through sporting heritage. September saw us ready to refocus, whether that was going back to school armed with a best practice toolkit for creating learning resources, or setting into motion new creative ideas for sharing digital cultural heritage, guided by learnings from others on things like creating podcasts and vlogs.

EVALUATING OUR IMPACT

Working in the cultural heritage sector is all about making a difference to the people who visit and use our products and services. Europeana helps cultural heritage institutions to measure, evaluate and understand the impact of their work on stakeholders, audiences and the wider public. We share highlights from the last year of working on impact, including the impact assessments of our 2019 (in-person) and 2020 (online) conferences.

A FOCUS ON COPYRIGHT

The ‘Copyright in the Digital Single Market (CDSM) Directive’ was adopted in 2019 - we explore the progress and choices Member States are making in implementing it, the challenges involved, and take a look at why risk management remains important when clearing rights and publishing collections online.
