Europeana 1989: Documenting Historic Turning Points Via Crowdsourcing

The historic events of 1989/1990 marked a turning point in European history, as 2015 may well prove to be. It is important to document such crucial phases in our history, and to start doing so as early as possible. Crowdsourcing can play a useful role here by helping to gather information through the collection and documentation of personal accounts and source materials.

Europeana Research at the EAGLE Conference, Rome, 27-29 January 2016

I was very pleased to recently receive an invitation to present a keynote on behalf of Europeana Research at the EAGLE Conference at Sapienza, University of Rome. EAGLE is the Europeana network of Ancient Greek and Latin Epigraphy, and the conference brought together many members of the Network who are working with digital content and developing tools and services for the wider community.

Reuse of Europeana content for fun!

As more and more digital content is created and ingested in digital libraries, there is a growing need for creative reuse of this content by the public, researchers or the GLAM sector, for producing new digital outcomes. This need is also identified as one of the goals of Europeana Research for encouraging further engagement of researchers with digital content lying within Europeana, implementing it in their research.

Its beauty is twofold: much of it has never been shared outside of a family or personal context, and now, being seen publicly for the first time, it can be marshalled into categories and mined for research.
