What’s new on the Europeana website? September - December 2022

We are constantly working to improve the Europeana website and add new features which allow people to explore Europe’s cultural heritage. Discover how recent updates benefit people using the website and data partners - and how you can use the new features.

Informative messages for failed downloads

We encourage everyone to discover and reuse the cultural heritage available through the Europeana website - for research, for education, or just for enjoyment. To support this reuse, we make finding and downloading items as easy as possible. Each openly licensed item from our collections has a download button on the item page, meaning that with one click, the media is saved on a device.

Unfortunately, despite our best efforts, sometimes these download links break. Previously, people who came across this issue would end up on a blank error page, but we have recently taken steps to more clearly communicate what is going on. We have added a message that explains to the person the download failed because of removal, changes or technical problems related to the provided download link and, when possible, a link to the providing institution where they might still find the item to download.

The text says: “If the download does not work, it may be because it has been removed by the providing institution, or there may be a technical problem with their service. We advise you to click on the ‘providing institution’ button below to check if the item can be downloaded on the website of the providing institution.” There is a button with the text “providing institution”.

Frequently asked questions

Through a feedback widget, we receive feedback and questions about our website, and the content on it, on a daily basis. To offer a first level of service and faster response time, we have now collected the most commonly asked questions - and provided answers to them! - on a Frequently asked questions page. We’ve also added a link to the page on the feedback widget.

Sharing curated galleries on WEAVEx

WEAVExperience (WEAVEx) is a web-based tool for managing different types of content (including 3D), documenting cultural heritage through digital community spaces, and curating digital stories and experiences. It’s one of the tools created as part of the WEAVE project. People can now reuse the galleries they curate on the Europeana website in WEAVEx. This facilitates WEAVEx users to curate the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Europe’s cultural communities. When people click the share button on a gallery, they will see a new button for this platform.
