Europeana is the result of the inspiring idea, backed by a letter from six heads of state to the President of the European Commission in 2005, that Europe should take ownership and responsibility of its past and make it an integral part of its future.

From 2020 onwards, while safeguarding the core components of the activities that have made Europeana an important agent of  change over the past decade, Europeana will focus on a single task: supporting the digital transformation of Europe’s cultural heritage sector.

With this strategic plan for 2020-2025, the Europeana Initiative will be strengthened, supported and reinvigorated as a strong networked organisation focusing on supporting the digital transformation of Europe’s large and diffuse cultural heritage sector.

This strategy demonstrates European Commission policy in action. It will be delivered by a collaborative approach led by the Europeana Foundation under a service contract with the European Commission, with the Europeana Network Association and the Europeana Aggregators’ Forum, European Union Member States and external partners.
