365 Days of Public Engagement with Science

As a European pilot project, Leiden European City of Science paved the way for a brand new tradition. Participants experimented with new ways of public engagement with science: out of the ivory towers and into the neighbourhoods of the city. Now, the project shares their experiences, results and lessons learned with you.

This event will present a keynote lecture by Michael Peter Edson, who will present his bird-eye view on Leiden2022 in the context of international developments in Open Science, Science Communication, and Public Engagement. The Expert Meeting will be moderated by Pedro Russo, featuring interactive, curated panels on the following topics:

  • GETTING CLOSER TO CITIZENS: The local, distributed Leiden2022 Model for Public Engagement with Science
  • BRAVE YOUNG MINDS: Fostering youth engagement in science, culture and society
  • BEYOND YOUR COMFORT ZONE: Challenging the scientific perspective; towards ‘engaged universities’
  • IMPACT & LEGACY: What’s next?

The panels will include: Karen Slavin (European Commission), Fredrike Schmitz (NOW Program lead Societal Engagement/Citizen Science at Open Science), Julia Cramer (Assistant Professor Quantum & Society at Leiden University), Andrea Stephany (EU TalentOn contestant), Ivo van Vulpen (Professor Science Communication at Leiden University), Henrik Scheel (Entrepreneur & Innovator), Margaret Gold (Citizen Science LAB Leiden University), Judith Vastenburg (neighbourhood committee Vreewijk), Roosmarijn van de Velde (former Chief New European Bauhaus Leiden), Tamara Witschge (lector Creative Media for Social Change, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences), Pieter Brouwer (director CigarBox), Henri Lenferink (Mayor of Leiden), and Ryszard Koziołek (Rector University of Silesia, Katowice European City of Science 2024).

Please note live seats are limited, as they can only welcome 50 guests in the studio. Want to *BE* there? Please register asap by sending an email to: tobiasvanbrandwijk@gmail.com. Online participation is always possible.
