Europeana connects the collections – 45 million items and counting – of more than 3,500 cultural institutions. We do this by harvesting metadata into the Europeana repository. This lets people browse and explore millions of records – all in one place.
Europeana will be the point of reference for anybody who would like to visit or study European cultural artefacts, for leisure or professionally. It will be the place where the similarities and the diversity of Europe will come together for everybody to see and explore.

The Europeana Publishing Framework and Guide
Every cultural institution has its own requirements, goals and capabilities. We recognize that and support all organizations who want to use Europeana to share their collections more widely. Whether you want to provide minimum level metadata to make your collections available on the Europeana Collections site, or higher quality data with direct links and open licences that people can build on, we will work with you. Your organization’s policies and ambitions set out how you want to share your collections; Europeana can help you reach your goals.
To manage content and deliver it in higher quality to our audiences, we’ve developed four tiers of participation in Europeana. What data partners provide will depend on their own agendas and capabilities, but the higher the quality of information provided by data partners, the more benefit they’ll create for their audiences. The Europeana Publishing Framework sets out these four tiers.
Once you have made your decisions on how to publish your collections with Europeana and you are ready to start working with us, we will refer you to our accompanying practical Publishing Guide which tells you exactly what your data needs to include. We aim to keep quality and user experience high; the guide provides a set of criteria to help you reach these standards.
Our network of aggregators
As a small-to-medium enterprise with about 40 employees based in The Hague, it would be impossible for us to interact directly with all 3,500 institutions at every stage. That’s why we’ve set up a network of partner aggregators. It’s the aggregators who do the data harvesting from cultural heritage organizations. They also help to model the data, expand the network of organizations, help out with copyright queries and much more.
We work with three types of aggregator:
- National/regional level
- Domain-level (libraries, archives etc.)
- Theme-focused (fashion, architecture)
With this devolved model, Europeana can collect huge volumes of data from thousands of providers, through only a handful of channels.
As soon as you contact us, we’ll take a look at your organization and its collection data, and decide with you on the most appropriate aggregation route. We’ll then connect you up with the relevant aggregator, who will take you through the steps outlined below.
